Light Habitat

This is the final product of my light habitat. I was only allowed to use mdf, paper, and ink. I wanted to create a simple design that really contained the light and framed the outside scene. I focused on the difference between colored light and natural light and also between streaming light and reflecting light. I included pictures of the two main details of my habitat which were the light boxes and the routed lines. I was very pleased with my final habitat.

3rd Skin Final

For this project we had to create a piece that exemplified natural light. We were only allowed to use mdf and one linear element. I decided to make mine hang so that the light would shine from the back and filter outwards. My inspiration was a flower and almost soft pine cone that I found outside. I rally wanted to emphasize a peeling away effect.

Story:Design

EXTRA EXTRA READ ALL ABOUT IT!
Every great work starts with a process, a flow of thoughts that builds into something greater. Design itself and stories share this same free flowing process. It’s what becomes of these thoughts that determines if the outcome is a success or not. With design and stories alike one has to find the pieces that work. The best way to start off is to unleash all the ideas you are having. After this it’s the process of filtering and picking the most fundamental plots or designs and finding a way to translate them. This is another similarity is that both are used as a sort of communication. A story is a way to show either a false or a factual journey. Whereas a design is a way to communicate ones style. Both provoke the audience to feel a certain emotion or have a certain opinion.
The next part of the process and the best way to get a final product that is satisfying is to work on it many times. When one is writing a story, it is important to write many drafts and have revisions so that what is left is the very best work possible. Just like what I will do to this very article to make sure that I am showing a clear connection between design and stories. In design, revision is also very important. Scale models and quick sketches among with others are all important in building a final product with the highest craft and most impressive design. Also along the same lines, to better ones own work they must be hands on with it. When speaking about the way he teaches his class at Yale University William Zinsser writes” The moral was clear: crafts don’t get learned by listening.” (Zinsser, Wiliam.First Use Plain English.2009) Zinsser shows an important lesson, that for one to fully understand and become better at their art they must have practice first. Althoguh a story or a design may not first make sense, the revision and future attempts will serve to better it.
In the later stages of the process it is all about making ones work unique and interactive. With literature and design your work must have a certain aspect that makes it stand apart from the rest. There are a plethora of books and papers and articles and lamps and chairs, but what makes something sucessful is if it stands out against the rest. Each piece of work should have a personal touch that shows the creativity of the creator. The hard part though is being able to reach the intended audience, while also keeping enough of oneself in the work. Both stories and design are about finding a balance being able to satisy on many levels. If a work cannot interact with the viewer then it fails to serve its purpose. In the end, stories and deisgn share many aspects and similarities. They both are a process that in the end the ultimate goal is to express ones ideas in a fully understandable and pleasing way.

Found In Translation-Door Portal Final

This is the final stage of the found in translation project. We had to make a "portal" for the doors on the first floor. Our door had to symbolize the words hierarchy, proximity, and balance. We also had to incorporate our historical building, the Pantheon, as well. We decided to make curls that went all the way up and reached a peak at the top to resemble the corinthian columns found at the Pantheon.

Found In Translation-Balance

These are photos of my circulation model for the found in translation project. I had to use black and white paper and cardboard to illustrate my word balance. It is at a scale of 1/8":1'.

Found In Translation-Passageway

This is the next step in my found in translation project. We had to base our piece off of either a fairy tale we read or a creation story. I chose to depict my fairy tale The Blue Light. We had to use one 8"x8" black plane, and one white. We could cut it in any way, but we had to use it all. I also could use one linear element, but it had to be uncut. The project was to show progress and transition.

Found In Translation-Wall Section 3D

This is the wall section that  we did in studio. We had to make a wood framed wall corner using balsawood. The scale was 1":1'. Afer making the frame we had to make a place on the wall for our artifact.

Found In Translation-Artifact

The first project of the new semester for studio was to create a wearable artifact based on a fairy tale. My fairy tale was the blue light which is about trickery, karma, and greed. I decided to make a purse because it relates to how the king in the story has an infinite amount of wealth, but in the end looses it all because of greed
